Istanbul's Shiva Zahed Gallery Opens with Iranian Art Amid Regional Turmoil

On February 28, the Shiva Zahed Gallery opened its doors in Istanbul's Pera district, highlighting Iranian contemporary art. The first exhibition, titled Echoes, showcases the works of installation artist Shaqayeq Arabi and Fereydoun Ave, both of whom have pieces in prominent museums. Founded by Shiva Zahed, a former medical doctor who relocated from Iran to Turkey last year, the gallery's launch was delayed from January 28 due to protests and communication disruptions in Iran. Zahed discovered artists experiencing a "state of pause" due to travel challenges. The gallery seeks to bridge Tehran with the global art scene, despite facing hurdles like sanctions and visa issues. A group exhibition, initially postponed, is set for May, although ongoing difficulties cast doubt on the plans. Zahed considers the gallery a vital risk.
