Israeli Military Unit Suspended Following Assault on CNN Journalists in West Bank

The Israeli military has suspended the Netzah Yehuda battalion after soldiers from the unit assaulted a CNN news crew in the West Bank. The incident occurred last week in the village of Tayasir, where the journalists were reporting on settler violence. Footage shows soldiers approaching with raised weapons, shouting at the crew, and placing a producer in a chokehold. This marks an unusual instance of disciplinary action against Israeli forces for misconduct. The Netzah Yehuda unit, composed of ultra-Orthodox soldiers, has previously faced allegations of mistreating Palestinian civilians. In 2022, the battalion was involved in the death of a 78-year-old Palestinian American man during detention, prompting U.S. government criticism and resulting in officer reprimands and reassignments. Following that case, Israel relocated the unit from the West Bank. Settler violence in the territory has increased this year, with United Nations data indicating at least nine Palestinian fatalities caused by Israeli settlers. Punishments for such violence remain infrequent. The military announced the suspension on Monday, describing the assault as a rare case of accountability.
