Isamu Noguchi Retrospective Examines Cross-Disciplinary Practice and Civic Engagement

exhibition · 2026-04-01

The High Museum of Art in Atlanta is presenting 'Isamu Noguchi: I am not a designer,' a major retrospective exploring the artist's boundary-crossing work. Running from April 10 to August 2, this exhibition marks the first comprehensive design-focused survey of Noguchi's career in nearly 25 years. It features approximately 200 objects, many previously unexhibited, organized thematically to highlight his integration of sculpture, architecture, and design. Noguchi, born to a Japanese poet father and American writer mother, developed a transnational practice that synthesized Eastern and Western philosophies. His career spanned sculpture, landscape design, theater sets, and industrial production, with notable collaborations including Martha Graham and Herman Miller. Key works range from early projects like 'Play Mountain' (1933) to public commissions such as the 'Playscapes' playground in Atlanta's Piedmont Park (1976), his only U.S. playground realized during his lifetime. The exhibition includes sections like 'Making Multiples,' examining reproducibility through items like the 'Radio Nurse' (1937), and 'Elements of Architecture,' featuring lighting designs and models for projects including Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park. Curators Monica Obniski and Marin R. Sullivan emphasize how the show resists disciplinary hierarchies, presenting design as coextensive with art. High Museum Director Rand Suffolk notes the rarity of bringing together so many significant works. After its Atlanta presentation, the exhibition will travel to the Peabody Essex Museum and the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester. The retrospective contextualizes Noguchi's influence on contemporary artists like Olafur Eliasson, Theaster Gates, and Do Ho Suh, who similarly explore space, participation, and social function. It frames Noguchi's 1949 statement 'I am not a designer' as a provocation that opens creative fields, positioning his practice as a living methodology relevant to current discussions about art's role in everyday life and civic spaces.
