Irreversible Entanglements Releases Fifth Album 'Future Present Past' on Impulse! Records

The free jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements has released its fifth studio album, 'Future Present Past,' on Impulse! Records. The group, formed in 2015, includes poet and musician Camae Ayewa, known professionally as Moor Mother, along with bassist Luke Stewart, saxophonist Keir Neuringer, trumpeter Aquiles Navarro, and drummer Tcheser Holmes. The collective originated from an impromptu performance at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event in New York following the police killing of Akai Gurley. Their music blends free jazz with electronic, punk, and hip-hop elements. Ayewa, who also teaches composition at the USC Thornton School of Music, emphasizes the group's collaborative nature, stating they operate without a single leader. The album was recorded at the historic Van Gelder studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, a site known for classic jazz recordings. Lyrically, the work focuses on future-oriented themes of organization and hope, as seen in tracks like 'Don't Lose Your Head' and 'Vibrate Higher.' Ayewa notes that while some in the jazz community might prefer more conventional approaches, the group remains committed to its uncompromising artistic vision. She is also working on a California-focused solo album as Moor Mother, featuring collaborations with local artists, including a posthumous contribution from producer Ras G.
