Iran warns against bypassing its Strait of Hormuz route

On Sunday, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi cautioned that any efforts by vessels to circumvent its designated route via the Strait of Hormuz would heighten tensions in the Middle East. This statement followed Oman’s announcement of a new route along its coast, developed with the International Maritime Organization, which provoked Tehran’s ire. The interactions between US and Iranian military forces highlight the delicate nature of a ceasefire brokered by Pakistan that began in April, intended to halt a conflict initiated by the US and Israel in February, which had disrupted shipping and unsettled global energy markets. Despite the ceasefire, sporadic violence persists in the Gulf, often ignited by incidents involving vessels in the strait. Iran maintains its claim over this crucial passage, through which one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas typically flows, a control it lacked prior to the conflict. While the strait encompasses both Omani and Iranian waters, customary international law generally prohibits either nation from obstructing passage or imposing tolls.
