Iowa State University Museums Director Lynette Pohlman Announces Retirement After 55-Year Career

Lynette L. Pohlman, who holds the Warren and Beverly Madden Endowed Director and Chief Curator position at University Museums at Iowa State University, will conclude her professional duties on June 3, 2026. Her departure marks the end of an exceptionally long association with the institution, spanning 55 years. Pohlman began her involvement as a student worker in April 1971, initially contributing to restoration efforts at the Farm House Museum prior to the establishment of the Brunnier Art Museum. She is recognized as the inaugural staff member of what has evolved into a network of five museums and public art initiatives at the university. Following the resignation of the first director in 1980, she assumed the role on an interim basis and was formally appointed to the permanent directorship in 1983. Her leadership tenure of 46 years positions her as one of the most enduring museum directors in the country. Under her guidance, the museum system experienced significant growth and development over more than four decades.
