Inta Ruka Exhibition at Fotografiska Tallinn Features Decades of Latvian Portraiture

Fotografiska Tallinn is presenting 'Places Called Home,' an exhibition of Latvian photographer Inta Ruka's work spanning from 1983 to 2008. The show includes over 80 photographs from two major series that document life in Latvia during a period of significant social transition. Ruka, born in 1958, began photographing people in her native country with a deep interest in their individual stories and environments. She used a classic Rolleiflex camera and worked slowly, building trust with her subjects over repeated visits. The exhibition features 'My Country People,' a series started in 1983 that focuses on rural communities in northern Latvia's Balvi area, capturing a disappearing way of life among people who experienced war and occupation. This series represented Latvia at the 1999 Venice Biennale, marking Ruka's international recognition. Also included is 'Amālijas iela 5a,' a four-year project documenting residents of an early 20th-century apartment building in central Riga during the mid-2000s, portraying urban life through portraits and everyday moments. Exhibition curator Maarja Loorents notes that Ruka's approach combines documentary authenticity with artistic vision, creating distinctive images that preserve personal histories and environments. The photographs serve as historical records of communities and traditions that have undergone substantial change. The exhibition runs until October 4 at Fotografiska in Tallinn.
