Instagram Restricts Undisclosed AI-Generated Profiles

On Monday, Instagram revealed plans to change its current 'AI creator' label to 'AI-generated profile' and will restrict the visibility of accounts showcasing AI-generated individuals that lack proper disclosure. This new designation is intended to provide users with clearer information regarding profiles that are either created or significantly influenced by AI. Accounts that do not utilize this label may experience diminished reach, while those that do will not face penalties. This label is not mandatory for other AI applications, like photo editing or caption enhancements. The adjustment is a response to user concerns about profiles that seem human but are ultimately AI-generated. This decision follows a Wired investigation into AI-generated male influencers promoting the dating app Goose and a New York Times article on AI-generated health figures. Additionally, Instagram encountered criticism for an AI tool that utilized users' images without their consent, prompting Meta to eliminate the feature. Last week, Meta also settled for $18 billion with U.S. states over claims regarding the impact of Facebook and Instagram on minors, which includes new limitations for teenage users.
