Insta360 Launches Luna Gimbal Cameras After Five-Year Development

Insta360 has introduced the Luna and Luna Ultra gimbal cameras, developed over five years with an initial investment of 30 million yuan ($4.4 million). Founder JK Liu revealed in an interview with DC.Watch that the project began with a modular design inspired by the One R, but thermal issues led to a redesign. Liu insisted on a detachable display and controller, delaying the launch by six months. The Luna Ultra features dual Leica Summicron lenses (20mm and 60mm equivalent) with f/1.8 aperture, co-engineered with Leica. The cameras aim to compete with DJI's Osmo Pocket, which dominates the market. Liu emphasized the importance of user experience, allowing remote operation without a smartphone. The partnership with Leica, now in its sixth year, was extended last year.
