Insta360 CEO JK Liu Envisions a Future Where Cameras Become Invisible

Insta360 founder and CEO JK Liu has articulated a long-term vision for cameras to become so autonomous that users forget they exist. In an interview with Japanese imaging website DC.Watch, Liu discussed the development of the Luna and Luna Ultra cameras, Leica's involvement, and his hope that one day cameras will act like professional photographers, automatically filming desired content. Liu elaborated in a follow-up with PetaPixel, describing a personal experience where using a camera caused him to miss a live moment. He advocates for a "future cameraman"—a robotic imaging system integrating AI, 360° capture, spatial intelligence, and real-time action. Insta360 is already developing foundational technologies: AI stitching, FlowState stabilization, subject tracking, reframing, automatic editing, and on-device processing. Research includes a panoramic depth foundation model, panoramic image generation on Diffusion Transformer architecture, and a unified monocular 3DGS model. Liu believes the company is closer than many realize to a fully autonomous camera, emphasizing that the best camera is one that "disappears," allowing users to experience moments without technical distraction.
