Inploration: Art Exploring Space to Understand Earth

Richelle Ellis, an artist, author, and founder of curatorial platforms Inploration and Supercollider, has compiled a decade of research into the book 'Inploration: Art Exploring Space to Understand Earth', forthcoming from Delmonico Books. The volume features nearly 100 artists, scientists, astronauts, and futurists, exploring how our relationship with the cosmos can foster a deeper understanding of our planet. Ellis coined 'inploration' as a counterpart to exploration, focusing inward rather than outward. The book includes works by Cannupa Hanska Luger, Tavares Strachan, Wangechi Mutu, Cai Guo-Qiang, James Turrell, Lucy McRae, Azuma Makoto, Pannaphan Yodmanee, and Lita Albuquerque, among others. Highlights include Cai Guo-Qiang's 'Sky Ladder' (2015), a 500-meter gunpowder ladder realized at Huiyu Island Harbour, Quanzhou, Fujian; James Turrell's 'Roden Crater' in the Painted Desert; and Lita Albuquerque's 'Stellar Axis: Antarctica' (2006). The book is scheduled for release at the end of October and is available for pre-order on Bookshop. Ellis's work is grounded in the idea that questioning the universe can revive wonder for our planet, a theme echoed in Barry Lopez's essay 'The Passing Wisdom of Birds', which critiques scientific methodology for divorcing data from experience.
