Ingo Maurer's Colorful Lighting Transforms Munich's Westfriedhof Subway Station

The Westfriedhof subway station in Munich, Germany, features a distinctive lighting installation designed by Ingo Maurer. Completed in 2001, the project includes eleven large domed lamps, each twelve feet in diameter, that emit red, blue, and yellow light. The station, which opened in 1998, was planned by the architecture firm Auer and Weber in collaboration with the city's subway department. Located between the Neuhausen-Nymphenburg and Moosach districts, it served as the northern terminus of the U1 line for four years. Maurer's concept focuses on the emotional impact of light and color, using minimal decor and exposed concrete to create an immersive, cave-like atmosphere. The installation has made the station a popular photographic location.
