Indianapolis' Big Car Collaborative Transforms Historic Dairy Barn into Contemporary Art Museum with Artist Housing

The Contemporary Art Museum of Indianapolis is being developed by Big Car Collaborative in a repurposed dairy barn located on the south side of Indianapolis, with an anticipated completion in the next six weeks. This initiative features 18 vibrant, affordable homes for artists and their families. Jim Walker, the 57-year-old executive director, outlined plans for a D.J. to welcome guests at the southern entrance and restrooms that will play ambient music influenced by Japanese aesthetics. The expansive area still shows grooves on poles where delivery horses were once tied. Walker and Shauta Marsh have been at the helm of this arts nonprofit for seven years. The museum will be surrounded by bright turquoise, orange, and purple residences, with sunlight flooding the open concrete space on sunny days. This vision merges contemporary art with community-oriented housing.
