IMLS Survives Legal Challenge but Faces Elimination in Trump's 2027 Budget Proposal

A recent legal settlement has secured the future of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) after lawsuits challenged President Donald Trump's directive to shut it down. Back in April 2026, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and the American Library Association filed the lawsuits, which led to court decisions preventing the agency's closure. Trump's proposed budget for 2027 indicates a complete cut to IMLS funding, allocating only $6 million for its shutdown while increasing defense spending by $445 billion. Cultural institutions are also facing big budget cuts, with just $29 million for the National Endowment for the Arts and $38 million for the National Endowment for the Humanities. Congress had previously set aside $291.8 million for IMLS in 2026, with a budget deadline coming up on September 30.
