IFPDA Experts Share 14 Rules for Collecting Prints and Works on Paper

opinion-review · 2026-10-22

In a recent publication by CULTURED for Prints & Drawings Month, seven members of the International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA) shared insights on collecting. Executive director Jenny Gibbs warned collectors not to assume that all prints are part of an edition, citing unique pieces by artists such as Rembrandt, Degas, Munch, Matisse, Picasso, and Warhol. She highlighted the importance of focusing on figures like Dürer and Bourgeois, mentioning Warhol's silkscreen Shot Sage Blue Marilyn, which fetched $195 million. Rhonda Long-Sharp suggested examining both sides of artworks, while John Szoke pointed out the significance of personal preference. Dakota Sica recommended museum-quality plexiglass and archival framing, David Tunick emphasized the importance of quality and dealer choice, and William Shearburn encouraged budget flexibility. Featured pieces included Picasso's Buste au Corsage à Carreaux and Warhol's Flowers.
