Iceland’s Drone Ban: Conservation Theater or Regulation?

Photographer Jeroen Van Nieuwenhove critiques Iceland's Nature Conservation Agency (Náttúruverndarstofnun) for a new policy effective May 17, 2026, that bans recreational and educational drone use in over 25 protected areas while permitting commercial film and advertising. Despite his 2025 permit being granted for the same locations and activities, his 2026 application was denied after 196 days. The agency cites disturbance to visitors and wildlife, but its own 2019 study found few visitors disturbed, and the management plan does not list drones as a threat. Meanwhile, louder activities like helicopters, buses, and snowmobiles remain permitted, with plans to expand infrastructure. Van Nieuwenhove argues the policy is inconsistent, lacking evidence, and favors large productions over small businesses. He contrasts it with Vatnajökull National Park's graduated, evidence-based drone rules. He has filed an appeal with the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Climate.
