ICE suspends vehicle stops after agents fatally shoot two drivers in Texas and Maine

Following the fatal shootings of two men during immigration-related vehicle stops in Texas and Maine, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has halted such enforcement actions. This change in policy was announced on Tuesday, just one day after an ICE officer shot a driver in Biddeford, Maine, located approximately 24 km south of Portland. The US Department of Homeland Security issued a statement nearly 12 hours post-incident, claiming the officer acted in self-defense due to concerns for public safety as the driver attempted to evade capture. Officials did not clarify how the driver posed a danger or if that warranted lethal force. ICE guidelines permit deadly force only in cases of "imminent danger" and not merely to stop a fleeing suspect. While some footage of the aftermath has surfaced, no public video of the shooting itself is available.
