Huawei Unveils Ascend 960 SuperPoD and UnifiedBus Upgrade at Connect 2026 in Shanghai
Huawei Technologies introduced the Ascend 960 SuperPoD computing cluster alongside an upgraded UnifiedBus interconnect technology on Thursday, advancing the Shenzhen-based company's effort to develop sophisticated artificial intelligence systems while navigating US semiconductor restrictions. The announcement came at the Huawei Connect 2026 conference in Shanghai, where the firm also brought near-packaged optics (NPOs) into its SuperPoD architecture for the first time. NPOs are a placement structure designed to deliver higher speeds with lower energy consumption. According to Huawei, pairing UnifiedBus with the Hi-ONE optical system lets a single SuperPoD link as many as 4,000 processors, pushing high-speed optical connections further into the computing system. The company frames the tools as central to its strategy of building advanced AI capacity despite curbs on semiconductor-related exports. The presentation positions Huawei's interconnect and optical work as an alternative path for scaling AI hardware, an area where Nvidia has held a dominant role in China.
