Hsin-Mei Lin Creates Immersive Installations That Translate Historical Memory into Bodily Experience

Taiwanese artist Hsin-Mei Lin creates immersive installation environments that transform historical narratives into physical experiences. Her work focuses on how collective memory, particularly Taiwan's complex political past including the White Terror period, shapes perception through spatial interaction rather than textual accounts. Lin's installations combine projection, architectural design, and participatory elements to create sensory conditions where visitors encounter historical tensions through movement, light, and sound. A significant project, 'Darkroom & Light: The Temporality and Shapes of War,' was presented in Taipei from December 2025 to January 2026. This exhibition occupied a school history classroom opposite Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense, creating dialogue between education and national authority. Co-directed with Ju-Ying Tsai, Chen Po-Jui, and Du Ke-Yu, the installation featured eight narrow chambers where visitors navigated confined spaces containing symbolic objects like paper boats and suitcases under shifting illumination. The spatial design emerged from workshop participants' bodily postures, translating physical tension into architectural forms. Lin's practice bridges artistic creation with educational engagement, informed by her PhD research at UCL Institute of Education. Her work circulates internationally across Europe and Asia, examining how geopolitical uncertainty and identity negotiation influence contemporary perception through immersive environments.
