Hoshinoya Nara Prison: Japan's Landmark Jail Transformed into a Luxury Hotel

architecture-design · 2026-06-30

Hoshinoya Nara Prison, a century-old red-brick prison in Nara, Japan, has been transformed into an all-suite luxury hotel by Hoshino Resorts. Designed in 1908 by Ministry of Justice architect Keijiro Yamashita, the prison was a showpiece of Meiji Japan's modernization. After closing as a juvenile reformatory in 2017, it was designated an Important Cultural Property. Hoshino Resorts spent seven years on conservation and adaptive reuse, led by Rie Azuma of Azuma Architect & Associates and Yasui Architects & Engineers. The 48 suites retain original vaulted ceilings and hand-laid brickwork, now exposed. The hotel features European antiques, a tasting menu called Gastronomy Chronicle blending French and Japanese cuisine, and a private path to the Nara Prison Museum. Landscape designer Hiroki Hasegawa and lighting designer Masanori Takeishi contributed to the grounds and ambiance.
