Horst P. Horst Retrospective Exhibition Opens in Venice
A major retrospective exhibition dedicated to photographer Horst P. Horst has opened at the Stanze della Fotografia on Venice's Isola di San Giorgio. Titled 'Horst P. Horst. La Geometria della Grazia,' the exhibition presents the most comprehensive overview ever assembled of the artist's work, featuring over 400 pieces with approximately half being shown publicly for the first time. The exhibition runs until July 5, 2026. Curated by Anne Morin in collaboration with Denis Curti, the show aims to expand understanding of Horst beyond his fashion photography for Vogue, placing him within the context of classical culture and twentieth-century European and American intellectual circles. The exhibition includes vintage prints, archival materials, unpublished documents, period magazines, preparatory drawings, sketches, sketchbooks, and personal correspondence from figures including Coco Chanel and Salvador Dalí. Horst P. Horst (1906-1999), born in Weissenfels-an-der-Saale and died in Florida, studied architecture in Hamburg and Paris before turning to photography, working with Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier. His architectural training influenced his photographic approach, characterized by precise proportional relationships and a Bauhaus-inspired emphasis on pure form. The exhibition is organized into eight thematic sections tracing his career from early drawings and self-portraits to his work for Vogue, his connection to Bauhaus principles, classical and neoclassical influences, architectural spatial awareness, natural patterns, floral still lifes, portraits of cultural figures, and previously unseen photographs from his 1947 Venice visit. Notable subjects in his portrait work include Ingrid Bergman, Coco Chanel, Salvador Dalí, Marlene Dietrich, Karl Lagerfeld, Gianni Versace, Luchino Visconti, and Diana Vreeland. Curator Anne Morin describes Horst's work as seeking essence rather than merely capturing the visible, while Denis Curti notes his synthesis of European modernism and fashion photography.
