Hodler's Sunset at Lake Geneva Fetches CHF 6M at Koller Zurich

At Koller auction house in Zurich, Ferdinand Hodler's 'Sonnenuntergang am Genfersee von Caux aus' (1917) sold for 6 million Swiss francs, doubling its estimate and achieving the second-highest auction price for the Swiss artist. The painting depicts Lake Geneva, a recurring subject in Hodler's most expensive works. Meanwhile, at Ketterer in Munich, Wassily Kandinsky's 'Villa Seeburg am Staffelsee' (1911), recently discovered in a private collection in Gelsenkirchen, fetched 4.4 million euros, more than double its estimate. The oil on cardboard work is noted for its jewel-like colors. Additionally, Gerhard Marcks's bronze sculpture 'Sich niedertuende Kuh' (1949), cast at the Barth foundry in Berlin, sold at Ahrenshooper Kunstauktionen on August 1 for 22,000 euros, up from an estimate of 12,000 euros. The sculpture captures a cow in a moment of lowering itself, abstracted in form, reflecting Marcks's interest in animal depictions.
