A historic Gilded Age estate known as Tower Hill Farm in Middletown, New Jersey, has been listed for sale at $10 million. This marks the first time the property has been on the market since 1949. The estate was originally constructed in the 1920s for Herbert N. Straus, an heir to the Macy's department store fortune. The property spans nearly 20 acres and includes nine structures with five separate residences, offering approximately 21,600 square feet of living space. Designed by architect Alfred Hopkins, the estate features Gothic arches, stone courtyards, a clock tower, Ludowici tile roofs, and hand-carved oak doors. The landscaping was created by Martha Brookes Hutcheson, one of America's pioneering female landscape architects, and includes meadows, tree lines, wisteria, and English ivy. Additional amenities include original stone fountains, a swimming pool, a tennis court, a barn with paddocks, and interconnecting pebble driveways. The property's current owners are descendants of James McConnell, who acquired wealth in the heating and oil industry. Listing agent Kelly Zaccaro of Heritage House Sotheby's International Realty described the estate as having a unique historical scale and preservation, comparing its ambiance to an old French village. The property represents one of New Jersey's few remaining connections to the Gilded Age era.
