Historic Benedictine Monastery Transformed into Luxury Hotel in Italian Dolomites

Castel Badia, a former Benedictine monastery originally constructed around the year 1000 in Val Pusteria at the base of the Kronplatz-Plan de Corones ski area, has been converted into a high-end hospitality venue. The transformation represents South Tyrol's first female monastery repurposed through a collaboration involving hotelier Aldo Melpignano, the Kronplatz group, and the Gasser and Knötig families. Architectural restoration was handled by local firm Null17, while interior spaces were designed by Studio Droulers in partnership with designer Marta Ferri. The project involved meticulous restoration of historical features, including mullioned windows supervised by heritage authorities, and the preservation of 11th-century fresco fragments in the crypt. The hotel now features 29 uniquely designed rooms that blend contemporary aesthetics with historical elements, using local materials like stone and wood. Amenities include panoramic baths, private saunas, hammams, a spa, heated pools, and dining venues like the Gastronomico restaurant and Stube, where Chef Alberto Toè creates regional cuisine. The complex also includes the Chalet building with private gardens and the Chapel of San Virgilio, its oldest section. This adaptive reuse project highlights the integration of Alpine architectural heritage with modern luxury hospitality.
