Hiroshima's Hijiyama Site Inspires Multisensory Exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Art

The Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art presents 'My Hijiyama Notes: Island, Mountain, Hill — and Sometimes Cats,' an exhibition from April 25 to June 28, 2026, exploring the layered history of Hijiyama. This location, once an island in Hiroshima Bay, holds ancient Jomon-period shell mounds and modern significance as a site for peace reflection. Artists including Yamaji Sho and Hamasaki Sahatsushi engage with Hijiyama through participatory practices like workshops using local sand and soil pigments, sound and scent collection, and fieldwork. The program aims to build a multisensory archive by reconnecting relationships between these practices, rediscovering Hijiyama as a space for creative dialogue. Held in Gallery B-1 with free admission, the exhibition runs concurrently with 'Collection Exhibition 2025-Ⅲ Highlights＋Relations [Guest Artist: Hirano Kaoru]' from February 14 to June 7, 2026, and 'The Secret of Finnish Sauna' from March 14 to June 28, 2026. The area's topography and memory, from ancient traces to atomic bombing marks and cultural institutions, are reexamined to make visible overlapping temporal layers.
