Hi-Fructose Tours Three 21c Museum Hotels Across Kentucky and Missouri
Hi-Fructose co-founder Atta toured three 21c Museum Hotels over four days, filing a report on October 19, 2026, that covers the chain's free public galleries and restaurants. Founded by collectors and preservationists Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson, 21c runs seven Museum Hotels and commissions work by living artists. In Lexington, Pieke Bergmans' Totally In Love stands outside, SOFTLab's Spectralline greets guests inside, and the group show Refuge: Needing, Seeking, Creating Shelter addresses migration, displacement, refugees and Chernobyl. Margarita Cabrera's Vocho, a hand-sewn Volkswagen Beetle with robot parrots made from recycled U.S. border patrol uniform fabric, sits near the lobby, while Anita Groener's Citizen hides silhouetted refugee figures among birch branches. Louisville, the first 21c site and the largest of the three, displays a gold recreation of Michelangelo's David and red penguins on its roof; Fallen Fruit's The Practices of Everyday Life fills the restaurant Proof on Main. St. Louis occupies a former YMCA, keeping basketball courts, free throw lines and a running track as gallery space, with a Fallen Fruit stairwell mural and the exhibition Dress Up, Speak Up: Regalia and Resistance, including April Bey's Colonial Swag project for the fictional Atlantica. Atta praised Proof on Main and found the galleries deliberately unsettling.
