Heritage Auctions Stages Texas & Western and Ethnographic Art Sales in November
Heritage Auctions will hold two consecutive November sales centered on identity, community and connections to place. The Texas & Western Art Signature Auction takes place Nov. 5, followed on Nov. 6 by the Ethnographic Art: American Indian, Pre-Columbian and Tribal Signature Auction. Paintings and objects in the two sales span centuries and continents. The cover lot of the Texas & Western catalog is John Nieto's Pow-Wow Dancer (1989), one of three works by the artist in the sale. The canvas stands more than seven feet tall and places the dancer's vivid regalia against a deep blue ground, rendered with expressive brushwork and electric color. Other highlights include a ranch foreman depicted against the land he tended and a gold figure posed in ritual movement. A dancer rendered in brilliant color opens the thematic thread running through both auctions.
