Heritage Auctions CEO Discusses Collectibles Market Growth and Company Strategy

In an interview for the Artnet Intelligence Report: Year Ahead 2026, Heritage Auctions CEO Joe Maddalena discussed the company's record performance and the expanding collectibles market. Heritage achieved over $2 billion in sales during 2025, marking its highest annual total. Maddalena noted that interest in popular culture items—including sports memorabilia, comic books, entertainment artifacts, and trading cards—continues to grow globally, with collectors increasingly shifting investment from traditional art sectors to these categories. He emphasized that this trend appears sustainable, driven by genuine collector passion. Heritage's strategy involves identifying categories with worldwide appeal and committing significant resources to develop those markets over several years. The company set multiple auction records in 2025, including $9 million for a Superman comic and $3.8 million for original Star Wars poster artwork. Maddalena highlighted emerging opportunities in Japanese manga and anime, predicting significant growth over the next five years. He also discussed the rising market for fantasy artist Frank Frazetta, whose 1966 painting 'Man Ape' sold for $13.5 million in September 2025—a record for fantasy art at auction. Maddalena attributed Frazetta's increasing recognition to his influence on narrative storytelling and anticipated heightened interest with the upcoming opening of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles. He positioned Heritage as distinct from major auction houses like Sotheby's and Christie's, focusing on illustration art and collectibles rather than fine art, and described the company as an industry disruptor despite its 50-year history.
