Doe Bay Retreat, a cost-effective weekend residence for a retired couple, has been finalized by Heliotrope Architects on Orcas Island. This 135-square-meter building employs prefabricated trusses to create roomy interiors while keeping expenses low. Nestled on a rocky ridge surrounded by ancient trees, it boasts sweeping vistas: to the south, water; to the north, a valley; and to the west, a grove of Douglas firs. The gable design divides into two sections with glass ends to capture views from both the north and south, with the entrance positioned at their intersection. Public areas face south and extend to a cantilevered terrace, while the private spaces, including the main suite, are oriented to the north. A simple material palette complements the owners' art collection and the surrounding landscape.
