Helga Paris's 'Diva in Grey' photographs of Halle shown at Moritzburg

A significant exhibition featuring Helga Paris's collection 'Häuser und Gesichter. Halle 1983–85', also referred to as 'Diva in Grau' ('Diva in Grey'), has been launched at the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale). This showcase runs from June 12 to September 20, 2026, and includes 101 black-and-white images that portray Halle during the mid-1980s. The series highlights the industrial smog, deteriorating buildings, and daily life in the German Democratic Republic. Paris (1938–2024) was inspired to create this work after Arno Fischer urged fellow photographers in the early 1980s to embrace the social documentary style of 1930s American photography. Her immediate reaction was, 'I'll take Halle,' as she was well-acquainted with the city.
