Hélène Havard’s 'Pacifica' Captures California as a Dream Already Seen

French photographer Hélène Havard, a graduate of EFET Paris who has lived in France, England, and Canada before settling in French Polynesia, presents her new project 'Pacifica,' which explores California not as a real place but as a mental landscape shaped by cinema, photography, and pop culture. Her work merges photography and painting, using color, light, and vast spaces to render familiar scenes subtly strange. The images feature late-afternoon pastel light, low Venice Beach architecture, and figures on asphalt or sand, evoking a film never made. Havard describes the territory as 'built as much by images as by geography,' where daily life takes on the atmosphere of a waking dream and the boundary between real and imagined blurs. The project arrives in midsummer, when the blinding noon light and holiday suspension make the drowsy landscape more believable. 'Pacifica' does not promise to reveal the real California behind the cliché but instead dwells within that saturated imaginary, making it appear strange again.
