Heatwave chaos: Parisians brawl over bargain air conditioners at Lidl

On Thursday, Lidl supermarkets in the Paris area experienced an influx of shoppers, leading to altercations and loud disputes as locals rushed to purchase affordable air-cooling devices ahead of an impending heatwave. Authorities intervened at a minimum of two locations after throngs of people flocked to Lidl for basic models starting at €179, a stark contrast to the usual prices exceeding €1,200. Mousa Traore, who stood in line for over an hour with around 200 others at a northern Paris Lidl, noted that only two units were available, which were seized by the police. France recently faced a record heatwave that resulted in numerous fatalities, overwhelmed medical facilities, school closures, and the cancellation of music festivals. Another hot weekend is predicted, and many homes and schools remain without air conditioning due to historically mild summers.
