Heather Evans Smith Publishes 'Skipping Sundays' Monograph Exploring Faith and Doubt

Heather Evans Smith's fourth monograph, 'Skipping Sundays,' self-published in April 2026, examines personal struggles with religious faith through conceptual photography. The 84-page hardcover book, designed to resemble a vintage hymnal, includes 30 color images and features a pocket containing ephemera like a 1987 calendar and a church fan. Smith, a North Carolina photo-based artist, draws from her rural upbringing and experiences as an only child to explore themes of memory, loss, and family. Her previous self-published works include 'Alterations' and 'Blue,' with the latter involving collaborations with therapists to address mental health. A book release event is scheduled for April 18, 2026, at the Eno Artists Den in Hillsborough, North Carolina, featuring live music and an artist talk. The book is available for $65 USD in an edition of 250 copies through her website. Smith's work has been featured in The New York Times and exhibited at venues like the Fox Talbot Museum in England and the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. She is a multiple-time Critical Mass Top 50 recipient and a 2022 Silver List artist.
