HBO's Harry Potter Cinematographer Details 'Brutal' Child Actor Filming Constraints

Adriano Goldman, cinematographer for HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series, revealed in an interview with Andre Pilli that filming with child actors Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton has been 'brutal' for the camera crew. The young cast's limited working hours—approximately 90 minutes on set per day—combined with mandatory schooling, force the team to shoot six setups in that window, often compromising quality for speed. Goldman noted that scenes must be pre-shot while the children are in class, and the schedule requires shooting out of order. The first season, based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, premieres Christmas Day on HBO Max. HBO plans to adapt all seven books over a decade, with season two directed by Mark Mylod and filming in the U.K. in fall. Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden built a temporary school on site to accommodate the cast's education. The challenges echo those faced by the original film crew, as a cameraman accidentally appeared in a scene in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets due to similar time pressures.
