Hawaii's Flag: The Only US State Flag with a British Union Jack

cultural-heritage · 2026-09-30

Hawaii, along with Texas, stands as one of the two US states whose flag represents an internationally acknowledged independent republic. The flag incorporates the British Union Jack, a design established during the War of 1812. British Captain James Cook arrived in Hawaii in January 1778, naming it the Sandwich Islands, and met his end there in 1779. Due to its strategic location, Hawaii served as a crucial resupply point for trade, with sandalwood being a significant export until the 1830s. In the 1790s, Captain George Vancouver reinforced British relations with Kamehameha, who unified the islands in 1810. The flag, adopted in 1845, features eight stripes representing the major islands. Sovereignty was regained in July 1843, and Hawaii was annexed in July 1898, eventually becoming the 50th state in 1959.
