Hany Armanious's Sculpture Empathy Chart Featured in Major Survey Exhibition

Hany Armanious, an Egyptian-born Australian artist known for his casting-based sculptures, is the subject of a retrospective exhibition titled 'Hany Armanious: Stone Soup.' The show, which originated at the Henry Moore Institute in the UK in 2024, has expanded to include over seventy works and is currently on view at Buxton Contemporary in Melbourne until April 11, 2026. Among the displayed pieces is 'Empathy Chart' from 2009, a cast polyurethane replica of a discarded noticeboard that explores themes of everyday object significance and accidental mark-making. The work, part of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia's collection, is on loan for the exhibition. Laurence Sillars, Head of the Henry Moore Institute and guest curator, describes the sculpture as a manifesto of Armanious's artistic approach, highlighting its focus on transforming overlooked items into contemplative art.
