Hannover Exhibition Explores Post-Vandalism Movement Beyond Street Art Traditions

An exhibition titled 'Under the Milky Way' at Kunstverein Hannover presents works exploring post-vandalism, a movement curator Larissa Kikol describes as distinct from conventional street art. Kikol, who writes the 'Hidden Masters' column for Monopol magazine about unauthorized art, co-curated the show with Christoph Platz-Gallus. The exhibition features artists and collectives operating outside legal frameworks, examining how illegal appropriation of public space influences artistic practice. Kikol argues that post-vandalism encompasses abstract painting, video art, installation, and conceptual works inspired by street experiences and alternative lifestyles, contrasting it with the more decorative, figurative nature of street art. Examples include the collective Rocco und seine Brüder, who created an unauthorized grave installation addressing housing costs, and the duo Moses und Taps, known for painting German postal vehicles without permission. Kikol notes that institutions are increasingly recognizing such practices, which have historical precedents in movements like Nouveau Réalisme and artists like Gordon Matta-Clark. She emphasizes that legal status does not determine artistic value, citing Ai Weiwei as an example. The exhibition aims to establish 'post-vandalism' as a recognized term in art discourse, highlighting how working under constraints like time pressure and legal risks fosters unique artistic approaches. Kikol also discusses Banksy's role, acknowledging his daring illegal actions but noting he represents street art rather than the post-vandalism focus of the show. The exhibition seeks to bridge institutional art with practitioners who engage directly with public space, challenging criteria like academic credentials or gallery representation.
