Hanna Rochereau's 1st Floor installation explores retail display logic at Paulina Caspari

Hanna Rochereau's debut solo exhibition at Paulina Caspari in Munich features 1st Floor, an installation examining retail display systems through absence. The work transforms the gallery into a space resembling a department store floor stripped of merchandise, with carpet markings preserving silhouettes where display stands once stood. Rather than directly recreating commercial structures, Rochereau focuses on their traces, creating what Jess Cole describes as "a shop without the wares." Cole's commissioned text, Levels, accompanies the exhibition, following a figure's journey through a department store from ground level sensory overload to upper floor sparseness. The installation engages with scenographic traditions concerned with traces as images, positioning the gallery as "a floor between floors" where organizational systems remain visible despite merchandise removal. This spatial premise explores how commercial spaces choreograph desire through object elevation, tiered shelving, and atmospheric lighting. Rochereau's work embodies both the illusion of what existed and fantasies of potential futures within retail environments.
