Hall 5 Studio Turns Surfboard Waste into Furniture and Objects

In Zarautz, Spain, Ignacio Abaitua and his daughter Carlota run Hall 5 studio, where they repurpose leftover resin and fiberglass from surfboard manufacturing into various items such as furniture, vessels, coasters, and soap dishes. After spending over 30 years managing production at the Pukas surfboard factory, Ignacio sought innovative ways to utilize the solidified resin and fiberglass that accumulated in the workshop. By early 2024, they aimed to create an artisanal method that incorporates a minimum of 50% recycled materials into each product. The Essentials series transforms hardened blocks into granules mixed with epoxy resin, achieving a terrazzo-like finish, while the Unic-oh! series features larger, manually broken fragments with up to 70% recycled content. The h5 x Auzmendi table was specifically designed for a shop window in San Sebastián.
