Haldane Martin's SuperRational Modular Outdoor Sofa Draws on Memphis Style

South African designer Haldane Martin has introduced the SuperRational modular outdoor sofa through his brand Haldane, featured in Dezeen Showroom. The design is influenced by the 1980s Memphis style and was inspired by an image of Umeda Masanori's Tawaraya Ring, often called the 'boxing ring sofa,' which Martin encountered as a student. This piece, which depicted the Memphis group including Ettore Sottsass, suggested a space for intellectual exchange. The SuperRational sofa consists of repeatable one-meter square seating modules with a grid-like stainless steel frame, offering both aesthetic appeal and functionality. It can be configured in various arrangements, such as conversation pits, daybeds, or conventional linear and L-shaped sofas, allowing for flexible use. The frame comes in polished or powder-coated finishes, with 30 color options, and features drainage to help cushions dry quickly. Materials include stainless steel, polyurethane cushions, and textile covers from Crevin's Salina and Fiji fabrics. Each module measures 1000 by 1000 by 797 millimeters. The release highlights Martin's creative process and the product's adaptability for outdoor settings.
