Hackney Mosaic Project: Therapeutic Art Beautifies East London

Founded in 2011 by mosaic artist Tessa Hunkin, the Hackney Mosaic Project in East London unites individuals grappling with addiction and mental health issues to craft public mosaics. Initially intended as a six-month program for the London 2012 Olympics, it has evolved into a lasting therapeutic arts initiative. Hunkin likens the mosaic-making process to 'a holiday for your head,' emphasizing its mindful nature. The project has created several public murals throughout Hackney, such as 'Hounds of Hackney Downs' and 'Unsung Heroes of Hackney,' which honor the area's wildlife, history, and community members. Participants, including Billy and Jamie, have shared significant improvements in their mental well-being and sense of purpose.
