Initially self-published in February 2025, the book gained traction on TikTok and Goodreads, prompting Hachette to acquire it for a UK release scheduled for November 2025, with plans for a U.S. launch in April 2026. Concerns from online communities about AI involvement led to an analysis that confirmed the significant AI generation rate. Following a report from the New York Times, Hachette determined that Ballard breached her contract by failing to provide original material. Ballard, however, asserts she did not use AI, suggesting a friend might have employed AI tools during the editing process.
