Gwangju Biennale Opens Call for 2028 Artistic Director

institutional · 2026-06-12

For the first time since its inception in 1995, the Gwangju Biennale Foundation is opening an artistic director position for its 17th edition in 2028 through an open call, departing from the previous method of direct appointments. In the past, the board chose the director from a shortlist of candidates. This new approach encourages individual curators or curatorial teams, both domestic and international, to submit their portfolios and concepts. The foundation aims to create a more democratic and transparent selection process while honoring Gwangju's spirit and its 30-year legacy. Applications will be accepted from June 8 to August 3, with the new director expected to be announced in October. The 16th edition, "You must change your life," directed by Ho Tzu Nyen, will debut on September 5.
