Gris Tormenta publishes Aatish Taseer's 'Discípulo del fuego' on V.S. Naipaul mentorship

Mexican publisher Gris Tormenta has released 'Discípulo del fuego', a book by Aatish Taseer (London, 1980) that expands on his profile and essay about V.S. Naipaul originally published in Granta (2025). The work examines the intense mentor-mentee relationship between Taseer and Naipaul, marked by extreme intellectual demands and the risk of creative annihilation. Beginning in 2007 as a search for validation, Taseer's journey turned into an existential struggle against Naipaul's overwhelming influence, until the disciple realized authenticity required learning from his own mistakes rather than submitting to the master's shadow. The book includes a prologue by Carlos Manuel Álvarez, which shifts the tone from chronicle to philosophical reflection, framing Taseer's personal experience as a historical lesson on creative sovereignty. Álvarez's intervention, drawing on Barthes' anchoring theory, demystifies Naipaul as a predatory mentor and grants Taseer the literary authority the original format could not consolidate. Gris Tormenta's editorial work is described as a 'curatorship of meaning', pairing Taseer's vulnerable chronicle with Álvarez's analytical dissection to show how a writer is constructed and how one's own voice is negotiated.
