Grimanesa Amorós Illuminates Printemps New York with Light Installation

exhibition · 2026-03-31

Artist Grimanesa Amorós created 'PERFECT TIMING,' a large-scale light installation on the façade of the Printemps New York flagship store on Wall Street. The work was unveiled one year ago to mark the store's opening. Inspired by the rhythms of New York and Paris, where Printemps has locations, the installation uses programmed light sequences to reflect urban movement, including traffic signals, passing vehicles, and pedestrian flow. Amorós describes the piece as a dialogue between art and fashion, with each maintaining individuality while creating a unified experience. The installation engages with the building's Art Deco architecture and invites viewers to contemplate time, motion, and stillness. Amorós developed the concept in her TriBeCa studio after a meeting with Printemps CEO Thierry Prevost, where they discussed light's ephemeral and transformative qualities. The artist's Peruvian upbringing, with its intense natural environments, influenced her sensitivity to light and color. The installation's lighting sequences change throughout the day and were recently updated to commemorate spring, incorporating colors like amber, green, red, white, pink, and purple. Amorós is currently working on 'FLUXUS,' a permanent project with New York City, and has created smaller light sculptures titled 'CAPPED WAVES,' inspired by Pacific Ocean waves. She continues to explore colder climates in her upcoming work.
