During the Hellenistic era, Greek culture extended beyond the Mediterranean as Rome took control of Greece's political autonomy. Alexander the Great's campaign towards India coincided with the early development of Buddhism, positioning Greeks as pivotal in its spread. In 1961, Ai-Khanoum, an ancient Greek settlement located in Afghanistan's Takhar province, was uncovered and excavated by the French Archaeological Delegation, although it faced near-total destruction during the Saur Revolution and the Soviet-Afghan war. This city boasted a palace complex, a theater with 5,000 seats, temples, and a large gymnasium. After succumbing to the Yuezhi in the second century BC, they adopted Hellenistic culture, as evidenced by coins depicting Greek kings alongside Hindu deities and the Bimaran casket illustrating Buddha in a Hellenistic style.
