GRASSI Museum Leipzig presents Latin American applied arts in 'El alma de los objetos' exhibition

The GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts Leipzig will open 'El alma de los objetos. Artes aplicadas de América Latina' on May 7, 2026, running through September 27, 2026. Curated by Luján Cambariere, who authored the book of the same name, the exhibition marks the first comprehensive showcase of Latin American applied arts in German-speaking countries. Featuring over 200 works from 56 artists, designers, and artisans across 13 countries, the display highlights materials, techniques, and socio-political dimensions of traditional and contemporary crafts. Pieces range from ritual items like talismans and masks to everyday objects, textiles, lighting, and furniture, with the oldest dating to the 1940s and most created from the 1970s onward. An opening event on May 6, 2026, at 19:00 will include participation from Latin American artists. The exhibition emphasizes artisanal production, community-based practices, and sustainability, reflecting regional ingenuity and resilience. Project management is handled by Silvia Gaetti and Sabine Epple of the GRASSI Museum, with graphic design by hey.brand & izoeasy, Leipzig, exhibition design by lfm2, Leipzig/Berlin, and graphics by Anne Dietzsch. Museum hours are Tuesday and Thursday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, and Wednesday from 10:00 to 20:00, at Johannisplatz 5–11, 04103 Leipzig.
