Gorman Arts Centre Undergoes Staged $12.9 Million Redevelopment in Canberra

The Gorman Arts Centre in Canberra is undergoing a $12.9 million redevelopment that began in July 2024, with completion projected for early 2028. The project, managed by Arts Capital CEO Nancy Bennison, involves a staged approach that allows resident artists and organizations to remain on-site during construction. The redevelopment focuses on functional upgrades including heating, cooling, security, and compliance improvements for the heritage buildings, which originally opened in 1924 as accommodation for public servants and were designed by architect John Smith Murdoch. Post-renovation, the centre will house approximately 40 individual artist studios, four multipurpose workspaces, a main hall, two theatres, and a new gallery. A new entrance on Batman Street will reorient the site toward the city and include a café and bar designed to generate income. The project aims to provide subsidized studio spaces at up to 50% below market rates through an 'everything but the art' economic model, which covers administrative and maintenance costs so artists can focus on their practice. Currently, 21 studios are occupied, with plans to increase capacity and introduce a new Expression of Interest process for greater transparency. Resident organizations include Canberra Youth Theatre, Rebus Theatre, and Australian Dance Party. The redevelopment has faced challenges including staff reductions in 2023 and the need to balance continuity for residents with diminished activation of the site. Recent efforts to animate the precinct include markets and festival partnerships. The slow pace of construction has raised questions about whether the timeline aligns with the growing demand for creative space in Canberra's changing neighbourhood.
