Goodricke Group's South Asian art collection fetches £18.9m at Christie's London

Christie's London held its first South Asian art auction since 2019 on 11 June, achieving £18.9m with fees from a 93-lot single-owner sale. The consignor was identified as the Kolkata-based Goodricke Group, a subsidiary of Camellia PLC, which is selling assets per its 2025 annual report. Abanindranath Tagore's portrait of Mahatma Gandhi (1922) sold for £1m with fees, over 15 times its estimate, doubling the artist's record. Ganesh Pyne's Fisherman (1977) fetched £3.8m with fees, a new record for the artist, last sold in 1997 for under £7,000. Over a dozen artist records were set, including KK Hebbar (£406,400) and Biren De (£120,600). The sale excluded most Bombay Progressive artists, with only one VS Gaitonde work making £2.2m. Bidders included Kiran Nadar, Kito de Boer, Taimur Hassan, and Dara Mehta, with online bids from China, Thailand, the US, and India. Christie's specialist Damian Vesey noted future London sales will be decided case-by-case.
