Goltzius Family Exhibition at Limburgs Museum Showcases Influential Printmaking Dynasty

The Limburgs Museum in Venlo is presenting 'Familie Goltzius – Meesters uit Venlo,' an exhibition exploring the artistic legacy of the Goltzius family. The show features Hendrick (1558-1617), Jacob (1574-1631), and Hubert Goltzius (1526-83), who were prominent printmakers during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Their works reached both royal palaces and private homes across Europe. The exhibition includes dozens of prints and some paintings that illustrate how multiple generations collaborated, influenced each other, and maintained a family business. Notable works include Hubert's 1563 book 'C. Ivlivs Caesar,' Hendrick's widely distributed 1583 print 'Mozes met de taferelen der wet,' and Jacob Goltzius II's print 'Ongelijke liefde' (1584-1600) based on Hendrick's design. The display also highlights the role of women in sustaining the family's artistic network. While the extensive collection may feel overwhelming, it effectively demonstrates the family's lasting impact on printmaking.
